All around the United States, people are starting to wear rubber band bracelets that are in a pattern.
A fad is a thing that is popular for a year or so, and then it is not so popular. In my opinion, I think they are pretty attractive. I have some because I thought they looked charming on your wrist. Also because I didn't want to be left out on the fad. Here are the bracelets in an array.

A old fad that was popular in 2010 was Silly Bands. I have tons of them. If you don't know what a Silly Band is, here is the definition.
A Silly Band is a simple bracelet that you wrap around your wrist and they are in different shapes.
If you know a fad, please drop me a comment.
Do you know both of these fads?
If so, do you have any of these items?
Dear Heather,
ReplyDeleteYes, I have both of the items that you listed, and I have a lot of Silly Bands. I can't even count all of the Silly bands. Alas, I can count the Rainbow loom bracelets. I have three of them, but the one I am making now is the Starburst. I know both of the fads, and cherish them all. In 2011 the fad was Pokemon cards which I don't prefer anymore. My favorite of them all is the Silly Band fad, but the bracelets are not far behind.
Do you have Pokemon cards?
Sincerely,
Bryce
@ Bryce,
DeleteI hope your Starburst bracelet came out looking good. What colors did you use?
Pokemon cards is a fad. I do not prefer it anymore, like you. My brother, Aaron, still plays with them thought.
I have so many Silly Bands that I can't even count them (like you again). If I just look at them, it seems like I have about two hundred! How much do you think you have?
Warmly,
Heather
@ Heather,
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great post about current and past fads. It is interesting to watch a fad catch on! I remember how hot the Silly Bands were a few years ago, and now they are out. I wonder if the same company that made Silly Bands now makes the Rainbow Loom kits. It looks like the bands are made out of the same material.
When I was in high school in the late 1970s, there were a lot of fashion fads too. One fad that I remember had to do with platform shoes and bell bottom jeans. Girls would wear these platform shoes that would add a few inches to their height. In addition, they would wear long, bell bottom pants. The fad was to have your pants be so long that they covered your platform shoes. High school girls looked like they were not wearing any shoes! Platform shoes were popular with boys, too.
I wonder what the next fad will be?
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
@ Mrs. Yollis,
DeleteSometimes, I wonder what the next fad will be too. For example, do you remember when in Ramona, by Beverly Clearly, there was a hard-boiled-egg fad. The fad was when you cracked the egg on your head to make a small crack so you can peel the hard cover of the egg. Unfortunately, Ramona had a egg that was raw, so when she cracked the egg, it came with a "SPLAT", and the egg was all over her. If anyone wants to see Mrs. Yollis' post about that fad, here it is:
Fabulous Fads!
I suggest that you should read the book if you haven't. If you like humor, this book will fit you perfectly.
Your student,
He☀ther
Oh, this is so true about fads!
ReplyDeleteYes, I've seen both of these fads... And many more have come and gone. When I was in elementary school, fads were rabbit's feet key chains (purchased with a quarter in a gum ball machine) and those bracelets that hurt when you slap them on your wrist. :-) I think it's fun to see the fads come and go - people keep being creative, and many jump on the band wagon! Here's a question for you... If you don't give in to the fad, are you deemed "not popular?"
@ Joy Kirr,
DeleteI don't exactly know if you are considered not popular if you don't join a fad. In my school, it is better if you join a fad, but you have to like it. After this comment, I am going to make a bracelet. The one I am going to make is the Pizzazz (PU-zaz). Sometimes, I really adore a fad, and I continue it even though it is not so popular anymore.
I think the bracelets that you are talking about are the slap bands. You have to slap them on your wrist just like you were talking about. Am I correct?
Your new blogging buddy,
Heather
Heather,
ReplyDeleteI am familiar with this fad but I don't own any of them. When I was a kid, slap bracelets where the fad! Have you ever hear of them? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slap_bracelet
Dear Anonymous,
DeleteThank you for your comment!
I have heard of slap bands, and my brother even has a Halloween slap band. It is interesting how you can just slap the bracelet on your wrist and have it stay there. Which fad do you like the best?
Sincerely,
Heather
Heather,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Amanda Weller and I am a student in EDM 310 at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. Thank you for sharing the recent fads! It's crazy to think that fads around the world are constantly changing. When I was younger I had several rubber band bracelets! I never went anywhere without my colored bracelets. I can't wait to see the new fads for the upcoming years! Great post and thank you for sharing!
Amanda Weller
@ Amanda,
DeleteI am eight years old, and I started a blog when I was seven. I don't have as many posts as my teacher, Mrs. Yollis, because she started in 2008! She has two blogs. I also have a adorable golden retriever mix. His mix is a chow. That is why his tongue is spotted with purple dots and his legs are shorter. Do you have a dog? Tell about yourself!
I see that you are from Mobile, Alabama. There is a person called Dr. Strange, and he lives in the same place! Are you one of the students of Dr. Strange? Did you know that we got to meet Dr. and Mrs. Strange by face in California?
I have many, many bracelets now. 2010 was when I was in Kindergarten. I had about two hundred Silly Bands, and I once was allowed to bring them to school! Did you have any Silly Bands?
Sincerely,
Heather
Dear Heather,
ReplyDeleteI do know all those fads you mentioned. Do you know the new fad? If not this is it. MOUSTACHES! There is a joke too. The joke is, "I moustache you a question but I am shaving it for later!"
Your Fad Loving Friend,
Clare
@ Clare,
DeleteI never knew that mustaches was the new fad. Lot of people still play with Rainbow Loom. I haven't seen anyone wear a mustache yet. Do you have a mustache?
I get the joke! He he! The joke is that you use mustache-related words like shaving and mustache. The sentence is suppose to say, "I must ask you a question, but I am saving it for later!" Instead, it says,"I mustache you a question, but I am shaving it for later!" Where did you hear this joke?
Your fad-and-blogging-loving-friend,
Heather
@Heather,
DeleteI noticed that Beanie Boos are very popular right now. I think that kids like them because of their big, shiny eyes. I have about 40 Beanie Boos. You can tell that I am a big collector.
I also know the catchphrase "I mustache you a question, but I am shaving it for later." I first heard it while I was tumbling at my favorite gymnastics gym, Tumble Tykes Gymnastics.
Can you make up your own catchphrase?
Your pal,
Shayna
Dear Heather,
DeleteI have a stick on mustache, but not a real one. Shayna told me that joke.Does Rocky have a mustache. Do you have any stick on mustaches?
Your Fad Loving Friend,
Clare
@ Shayna and Clare,
DeleteShayna, I can really see that you are a collector. I have about one hundred ten bracelets, but forty stuffed animals is a lot already. I have about that many stuffed animals altogether, but for one kind of stuffed animals, I think that is pretty incredible. Do you have any other kind of stuffed animal?
Clare, I have a stick-on mustache too, but I obviously don't have a real mustache. No, Rocky does not have a mustache, but I would like to stick one on to his mussel. Does Georgie have a mustache?
Your friend,
Heather
Hi Heather,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Briann Smith and I am a student in EDM 310 at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. Thank you for a great post about current and past fads. I remember when Silly Bands were popular. Everyone had a Silly Band, myself included! I had several Silly Bands in several different colors.
When I was your age, Slap bands were popular. Slap bands are bracelets that you attach by slapping them on the wrist. All of my friends would try to see who could get the most Slap bands. The Slap bands were popular with the guys, too.
What is your favorite fad?
sincerely,
Briann Smith
@ Briann,
DeleteIt seems like everyone knows the fad about slap bands when they were young. I have heard from about five people that slap bands were popular when they were about my age. In what year were they popular?
I like Rainbow Loom better than those simple Silly Bands because you can actually make them and wear them in style. With Silly Bands, you just stretch them out until they can fit on your wrist, and you can't even see what shape the bracelet is. Which one do you like better, Rainbow Loom or Silly Bands?
Sincerely,
Heather

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on being nominated by Mrs Yollis for an Edublog Award for best student blog. I saw her nominations and didn't recognised this site but it was great to hear about it, and having only just looked its something fantastic that I can show my students later today (its just before school here in New Zealand, being as we are a day ahead of everywhere else in the world!).
I have been very fortunate to be teaching for a long time there are two things that every year usually come around and start becoming popular at our school (although our students are a little older, we are an intermediate school so the students are 12 and 13). The bands and multi coloured ones are still quite popular, although they are against our schools uniform rules so the students are not suppossed to wear them!
Usually each year we get Marbles coming back in some form, or if not marbles some similar thing (bottle lids/caps, milk bottle lids). The other thing (game) that invariably makes it way into our school is called 'bullrush' now I am not sure if you are familar with this game, it may have a different name in the USA, but it involves a group of students running from one side of a field to the other and trying to tag or tackle the people running. Anyone who is tagged then has to help the other people in the middle so that the people actually running gradually gets less and less until one person is the winner.
Will be back later with my class of students. Well done again on your nomination.

@ Room 5,
DeleteThank you for congratulating me on my nomination! If I remember correctly, you got nominated too! Well done, Room 5!
I notice when you wrote coloured, you added a u. In the USA, we just write colored. I think that it is really interesting how you guys use a u. In my opinion, I like your coloured instead of our colored. Which do you prefer?
I have heard that mustaches are the new fad, but I haven't seen them around my school. What do you think is the new fad?
Your friend,
Heather
Hi Heather!
ReplyDeleteOK, so I thought of a fad. Well, actually two. One is mustaches: have you seen them around? There are mustache necklaces, rings and tattoos. I even saw a candy that looked like a mustache.
Two is friendship bracelets. You can make them with either yarn or embroidery floss. I love making friendship bracelets and I know 7 designs. They are so fun to make! Have you ever tried a friendship bracelet with embroidery floss?
Here are my questions. How long do you think these fads will last? Why and how do fads start? How do fads die out?
-Tian
PS I hope you write back to my comment. Also, if you have time, can you check out my blog? omanschoolcat.blogspot.com
Thanks!
I actually agree with you that Rainbow Loom will soon become a fad. I do know what both of what you are talking about, Silly Bands and Rainbow Loom. I have both of them. But I think I have more of the Silly Bands! I used to wear the rubber band bracelets but now I don't. And I even made all of the ones I have, but some my friends gave to me. Have you ever made them before?
