A Visit to Mountain High!

This year, I went to Mountain High like I did last year. I snowboarded again instead of skiing, but this year we only stayed for one day. We went on January 4, 2014, and that day was a Saturday. Instead of sledding for one day, we went strait into skiing and snowboarding. While my dad skied, my brother and I snowboarded. My dad, Jeffery, all of a sudden said that we were going to Mountain High tomorrow, and that day was Friday, January 3, 2014. My brother stated, "That was a quick decision," and we all agreed. It was already afternoon, so we had to hurry. As we hasted, we forgot a lot of objects. My dad wanted to learn to snowboard, but he forgot his knee and elbow pads. We all didn't want to loose our mittens, but we forgot to bring the little hooks that can hold our mittens. Even so, we had fun.

We went up a mountain and were about to snowboard. The view here was spetacular, so we Here is a picture of my brother and I standing on a mountain peak.

Like last year, we still went on a lift, but this time I went on the steepest route back down the mountain called Black Diamond. It is so steep that I had to go in sharp S shapes. I had to go to the right, and turn so I could stop, and then I would turn to the left, and turn so I could stop. I continued this pattern until I was either at the lift, or down at the lodge. This is a photo of an example of what I was doing. It isn't the exact photo of when I was on Black Diamond because my brother didn't go and he is there in the background.

The shape is like an S, and I have to stop at each edge. That will control your speed. It took a long time to get down, but I made it. I didn't go for a second time because it would take too long, and it was a little too hard for me, as this is my second year of snowboarding. After I went on Black Diamond, my dad and I split up and I went on an easier lift, and he went on Black Diamond.

Have you ever visited Mountain High?

If so, did you go on Black Diamond?

If not, where did you go skiing or snowboarding?

  1. Great post! I have been to mountain high, but I was too scared to go on black diamond. Good for you for doing it. I am really impressed. Was it scary? What gave you the confidence to try it? I tend to ski on the blue slopes. Is snowboarding harder than skiing?

I am also not very good at packing especially last minute. I also tend to forget things when I am rushed. It looks like you all had a fantastic time.

  2. Dear Heather,

I love those last minute trips that you just make work! Three cheers for your dad's idea!

Yes, I have been to Mountain High. However, it was a long time ago! Was there a lot of snow? We have been planning on taking Buck to the snow, but it has been so warm, many places do not have snow.

I learned to ski when I was in high school and enjoyed it very much. About ten years ago I tried snowboarding. I loved it, but it was a hard sport to learn. Although I took a few lessons, I never went beyond the beginner slope. Being on a gentle slope and developing mastery was my cup of tea!

Because a black diamond is so steep, you do have to keep making quick turns and digging in your edges. Otherwise, gravity would take over and you might not be ready for that!

I'm curious, what is the price for an adult lift ticket these days? When I started back in the late 70s, an all day lift ticket for an adult was $17.

  3. I have to admit that I have not been to Mountain High, but that it because I am a teacher who lives on the other side of the world. I loved reading your recount Heather, it was very detailed and contained a lot of information about the time that you spent there.

We don't really have snow in New Zealand where I used to live, however I have just changed schools and moved to a new location. My new school is in the country and here it does snow a little, we had some snow days when the school was close, although this was about four years ago. In my old city it had snowed twice in a hundred years.

I am really curious to hear the answer to Mrs Yollis question, although I think she is brave asking it - in the nearly thirty years since Mrs Yollis bought a ticket how have the prices changed?

    1. Hi Mr. Webb and Mrs. Yollis,

Planning a trip long ahead of time is not my thing -- that makes my brain hurt, and I like to surprise kids with short trips with very short notice (and short notice to myself as well :-)).

Since we experienced drought here this past winter, there was no much snow in the mountain. All trails were man made. However, we had good snow in the mountain last winter and it was snowing when we were up there. That's the first time kids saw it snowing -- lots of fun.

Lift ticket price? Probably you don't want to know -- they went up quite a bit. Depending on which day you go, it's either $59 or $69, and $30 for kids between 7 to 12 years old.

  4. Great post indeed! Looked like you guys had a lot of fun during your trip. Kids can get a bit rowdy at times, which makes them thirsty more often than not. Did you know that there's a backpack with a built-in water dispenser? It would really be handy during these kinds of trips!
